Below you will find an update on the recent key Safeguarding developments in Scouting. We hope you find this useful.
Updated Child Protection Policy
The January 2010 edition of Policy, Organisation and Rules (POR) includes a number of changes to the Child Protection Policy in areas such as the use of alcohol on Scouting activities and the creation of the Safeguarding Awareness Coordinator role.
New Yellow Card – fourth edition
An updated version of the Yellow Card is now available, which incorporates 'neglect’ into our policy statement.
A copy of the updated version of the Yellow Card will be enclosed with the August/September issue of Scouting magazine, along with an article highlighting the change.
Safeguarding training at appointment review
The new edition of POR contains a requirement for all those subject to an appointment review to complete approved safeguarding training. Safeguarding Awareness Coordinators need to work closely with County Training Managers to ensure that as many training opportunities as possible are available.
We've answered some frequently asked questions about the change – please ensure that your County Training Managers are aware of these.
Safeguarding Awareness Coordinator workshop materials
Packs of revised workshop materials for Safeguarding Awareness Coordinators have been distributed to all of those who have been formally appointed and completed The Scout Association’s training weekend.
If you have not received your pack (and you have attended the training) please email the Safeguarding team with your name, address and a contact telephone number.
Keeping Children Safe – online
Our primary method for delivering the Keeping Children Safe training package is now online.
Safeguarding Awareness Coordinators will have special access to detailed management information. Safeguarding Awareness Coordinators should have received login information direct from EduCare.
It is possible to grant additional ‘administrator’ access to others (such as those involved in training administration) by emailing the Safeguarding team to arrange this.
Safeguarding Awareness Coordinator Training Weekend
The next Safeguarding Awareness Coordinator training event will be at the NSPCC Centre in Leicester on 2 to 4 July 2010. There is a £10 booking fee, but no other charge.
The event is open to newly appointed Safeguarding Awareness Coordinators; those who need to renew their training; and trainers who would like to assist in the delivery of safeguarding awareness training.
Microsoft internet safety training
Over 130 adults completed an online internet safety session with colleagues from Microsoft in February. We are now working with Microsoft to offer this opportunity on a quarterly basis to adults in Scouting.
ThinkUKnow training
Over 3,000 young people in Scouting have now completed ThinkUKnow and 150 Scouters are trained to deliver the materials. There are a number of Scouting Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) Ambassadors too, who are able to train adults to deliver the package.
Dates for free ThinkUKnow training is shortly to be announced. We hope to offer Ambassador training at reduced cost later in the year
